QR07 Sala Vilaragut (Vilaragut Room)

This room is located in the north section of the castell.  This space is accessed by several steps, the same as the rest of the levels which exist on the semi-basement floor.

Before entering, in the left section of the door, there is a window with steps. The servants accessed the upper floor through this zone and with another stairway but it was a spiral stairway located in the andanes (pathways). We wished to conserve these elements as a reminder of the past.

This room has been named in honour of the Vilaragut Family, which forms a part of the Lordship history of Alaquas.

The roof of this space is comprised by thick wooden beams with revoltones (slab beam fill materials).

In the archaeological excavation carried out in 2006, the remains of the former Lord’s Estate House were revealed; a wine production area was discovered here with a wine cellar, which at certain times, was also used as an olive oil and food warehouse. Today, this room is equipped and used for exhibitions; it was designed in three levels. The bottom level features the aljibe (cistern), a new visitor space which was formerly used as a water tank. On the barrel vault ceiling, there is an opening which connects to the upper floor, specifically the library, where the water was supplied. We highlight that the cistern existed before the Palace, since part of its foundations are located on it.
